Zero to earning miles
in 5 steps
Never heard of Qantas Points or Velocity? No problem. This guide explains everything — from scratch — in plain language, tailored for people living in Australia on a visa.
What are frequent flyer miles — and why should you care?
Frequent flyer points (also called "miles") are a virtual currency you earn by spending money on everyday purchases. Groceries, petrol, food delivery apps, credit cards, streaming subscriptions — all of it can generate points.
These points have real value: you redeem them for flights, cabin upgrades, or hotel stays. A Sydney–London Business Class ticket normally costs AU$10,000+. With points, that same seat can cost just ~AU$200–400 in taxes and fees.
How it works in practice
The cycle has three parts:
The two main programs in Australia
Australia has two major frequent flyer programs worth your attention. You don't have to choose one — you can join both at the same time, for free.
| Program | Airline | Currency | Supermarket partner | Join |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qantas Frequent Flyer | Qantas | Qantas Points | Woolworths (Everyday Rewards) | AU$99 or free |
| Velocity Frequent Flyer | Virgin Australia | Velocity Points | Coles (Flybuys) | 100% free |
Woolworths → Qantas | Coles → Velocity
Each supermarket has its own loyalty program that converts into airline miles:
Ways to earn — from easiest to most powerful
There are several ways to earn points. Here they are ordered from most accessible (anyone can start today) to most advanced:
| Method | Points/month (estimate) | Effort | Needs a credit card? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supermarket shopping (Flybuys/Everyday Rewards) | 200–500 pts | Low | No |
| Gift cards on promotion (20× every Wednesday) | 5,000–40,000 pts | Low | No |
| 7-Eleven + DiDi + DoorDash (Velocity) | 300–800 pts | Low | No |
| Rewards credit card (everyday spending) | 2,000–8,000 pts | Medium | Yes (requires approval) |
| Sign-up bonus (new card) | 60,000–170,000 pts (once) | Medium | Yes (new card) |
| Insurance / energy / home loan | 10,000–250,000 pts (once) | High | Depends |
Wednesday gift card promos — the 20× secret
Every Wednesday, Coles and Woolworths put selected gift cards on a 20× points promotion. Instead of earning 1 point per dollar, you earn 20. It's the most efficient way to accumulate without a credit card.
How it works: You buy an Apple, Uber, or JB Hi-Fi gift card at the supermarket during the promo. You were going to spend that money anyway — now you get 20× points for it.
Your visa determines what you can do
The part no other site explains: not every strategy is available for every visa type. The biggest restriction is rewards credit cards — Australian banks block certain visas from applying.
