Complete Beginner's Guide

Zero to earning miles
in 5 steps

Never heard of Qantas Points or Velocity? No problem. This guide explains everything — from scratch — in plain language, tailored for people living in Australia on a visa.

Chapter 1 of 5

What are frequent flyer miles — and why should you care?

Frequent flyer points (also called "miles") are a virtual currency you earn by spending money on everyday purchases. Groceries, petrol, food delivery apps, credit cards, streaming subscriptions — all of it can generate points.

These points have real value: you redeem them for flights, cabin upgrades, or hotel stays. A Sydney–London Business Class ticket normally costs AU$10,000+. With points, that same seat can cost just ~AU$200–400 in taxes and fees.

Real example: Average weekly grocery spend: AU$200. During a 20× Wednesday promo at Coles: 4,000 Flybuys points per week. Over 1 year: ~200,000 points — enough for a one-way flight to Tokyo or Bangkok in Economy.
The fundamental concept

How it works in practice

The cycle has three parts:

1
Join a program (it's free)
Qantas Frequent Flyer or Velocity Frequent Flyer. Takes 5 minutes. You get a member number.
2
Earn points by buying normal things
Supermarkets, petrol, food delivery apps, credit cards — all of it counts. Points land in your account automatically.
3
Redeem for travel
When you have enough points, you book flights, upgrades, or hotels — paying with points instead of money.
The reality: most Australians (and immigrants) never redeem a single point because they don't know the system exists, or don't know how to use it. You're already ahead just by reading this.

Chapter 2 of 5

The two main programs in Australia

Australia has two major frequent flyer programs worth your attention. You don't have to choose one — you can join both at the same time, for free.

ProgramAirlineCurrencySupermarket partnerJoin
Qantas Frequent FlyerQantasQantas PointsWoolworths (Everyday Rewards) AU$99 or free
Velocity Frequent FlyerVirgin AustraliaVelocity PointsColes (Flybuys) 100% free
Tip: Start with Velocity — it's free, no visa check, and can be set up online in 3 minutes. For Qantas FF, search "Qantas Frequent Flyer free join link" on Google — free sign-up links exist and work.
Supermarket partners

Woolworths → Qantas  |  Coles → Velocity

Each supermarket has its own loyalty program that converts into airline miles:

W
Woolworths → Everyday Rewards → Qantas Points
Scan your Everyday Rewards card when you shop. Every 2,000 Everyday Rewards points converts to 1,000 Qantas Points (2:1 ratio).
C
Coles → Flybuys → Velocity Points
Scan your Flybuys card when you shop. Every 2,000 Flybuys points converts to 1,000 Velocity Points (2:1 ratio).
Important: points don't transfer automatically by default. You need to enable the transfer in the app settings (Everyday Rewards → enable "Transfer to Qantas" / Flybuys → enable "Transfer to Velocity"). Once activated, it's automatic every month.

Ways to earn — from easiest to most powerful

There are several ways to earn points. Here they are ordered from most accessible (anyone can start today) to most advanced:

MethodPoints/month (estimate)EffortNeeds a credit card?
Supermarket shopping (Flybuys/Everyday Rewards)200–500 ptsLowNo
Gift cards on promotion (20× every Wednesday)5,000–40,000 ptsLowNo

Insurance / energy / home loan10,000–250,000 pts (once)HighDepends
The most underrated strategy

Wednesday gift card promos — the 20× secret

Every Wednesday, Coles and Woolworths put selected gift cards on a 20× points promotion. Instead of earning 1 point per dollar, you earn 20. It's the most efficient way to accumulate without a credit card.

How it works: You buy an Apple, Uber, or JB Hi-Fi gift card at the supermarket during the promo. You were going to spend that money anyway — now you get 20× points for it.

Example: AU$200 in Apple gift cards during a 20× week = 4,000 Flybuys = 2,000 Velocity Points. Do that 4 weeks a month = 8,000 Velocity Points/month, just from spending you'd already do.
Double-dipping: If you have a rewards credit card, pay for the gift cards with it AND scan your Flybuys/Everyday Rewards card. You earn points from both at the same time.
Chapter 4 of 5

Your visa determines what you can do

The part no other site explains: not every strategy is available for every visa type. The biggest restriction is rewards credit cards — Australian banks block certain visas from applying.

WHV: no credit card, but you can still earn 8,000–20,000 Velocity Points/month through gift card promos + 7-Eleven + DiDi. That's enough for a domestic flight in 2–3 months.
Student (500): Commonwealth Bank (CBA Smart Awards) accepts international students with 6+ months remaining on their visa. It's the entry-level card for people still studying.

Your action plan — next 30 minutes

Enough theory. Here's exactly what to do, in the right order, depending on your visa:

1
Create your Velocity account (5 min)
Go to velocityfrequentflyer.com → Join → Fill in your name, Australian address, email. It's free, no visa check. Write down your member number.
2
Download the Flybuys app and enable auto-transfer (5 min)
Flybuys app → Rewards → "Transfer to Velocity" → enable. Your Coles points will now automatically convert to Velocity Points every month.
3
Link 7-Eleven, DiDi and DoorDash (10 min)
In each app, go to settings and link your Velocity account. From that point on, every coffee, ride and delivery order earns you points.
4
Set a Wednesday reminder
Coles and Woolworths release their gift card promos every Wednesday morning. Come back to Pointsy to see what's at 20× and filter by your visa type.
5
TSS / PR: apply for a rewards credit card
Go to the 💳 Credit Cards tab on this site, filter by your visa and see which cards are available to you. A sign-up bonus can be worth 60,000–170,000 points in one hit.
